| LURA BROOKINS ARTIST STATEMENT Images of Laura's Pastel Paintings “Landscapes that Found Me” My path to becoming an artist was indirectly direct. Dreaming in New York City of natural landscapes, I painted with oil, to reach my connection with nature. Completing my degree in Landscape Design at the New York Botanical Gardens, I moved to Santa Fe to implement my passion to work with nature. As I designed gardens and installed natural landscapes of native grasses and wildflowers, I traveled through northern New Mexico gaining excitement about the unique beauty of this land. Serendipitously, in the fall of 2001, a dear artist friend invited me to join her to paint in pastels on-the-spot, amidst the vivid aspen colors of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Soon, I came to realize and acce pt that I must honor my artistic drive to be free to paint outdoors, whenever the opportunity is given to me. Now, I am a joyful plein air painter, joining my artist friends to create adventures and art – thus fulfilling my passion to experience and manifest with color my visual witnessing of beauty – the expressions of human spirit and Nature.
