ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Born
and raised in a small town in Ohio, Joshua was raised with an appreciation
for nature and history. Joshua left Ohio at age 19 to attend the University
of South Florida in Tampa, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in American
Studies. Seeking a change of pace and eager to live near the Rocky Mountains,
he then moved to New Mexico where he has lived for six years. His familiarity
with stone began when last employed in Santa Fe, NM, where a bit of
free rein with stone tools enabled him to teach himself some of their
uses. Presently, in his stonework, Joshua enjoys exploring the juxtaposition
of high polish or finish against natural surface: “It has always
amazed me that an often overlooked and ordinary stone can reveal such
beauty beyond the exterior.” This basic principle pervades many
of Joshua’s pieces. His use of natural materials such as stone,
wood, and metal provide a limitless array of possibilities in functional
sculpture and furniture.
Jill Shwaiko and Josh are uniting their talents to create beautiful
sculptures. The pieces are a union of Jill's large bronze sheep and
Josh's granite fountains! The bronze sheep are a limited edition of
15 and each fountain is a unique stone of local, Cerrillos granite.
