ARTIST'S STATEMENT
I
was told that I was drawing before I could walk. I have memories of
spending endless hours creating these grand scenes in any medium within
my reach. This kind of creative frenzy came to me so naturally, that
my parents knew this could only be enhanced with some special art classes
that I took at the Museum of Fine Arts in Cincinnati, the place of my
birth.
In later years, when it came time for formal training, I attended the
University of Cincinnati where I majored in Fine Arts. In this environment,
painting with oils became my passion. After some life changes, I migrated
with my new family to Texas. The influence of this part of the country
had an escalating effect on my art.
Over the years I have developed many reasons for each series that I
have produced, but none have been so meaningful as this current stream
of paintings that began after a trip into Mexico about six years ago.
This is where my life took on new meaning and my art could only follow
the path.
The Frames
Each frame is unique to the piece of art, and often the frames become
the focus of discussion. Kay has always loved working with wood, and
after apprenticing with a master framer, she learned to perfect the
method and presentation. Most of the frames have an 'altar-like' quality
which gives a feeling of devotion to each piece. The frame is separated
from the painting, letting light come in from any direction. The effect
often creates a luminous quality to the vibrant paint colors.
Kay's artwork can be hung on a wall, or place on a flat surface. Some
have been placed in a window, which makes the painting glow. Each frame
is made with top grade lumber and finished with a high quality wax to
seal it.
