ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Robert SmithI was born on April 15, 1934 in New York City. They called us Depression babies! I sold my first art work for a penny when I was about 4 years old by going door to door in our apartment building. With the money, I could buy a bag of candy for 3 cents. I also started going to the Eastside House, a place for youth to get involved with art projects and sports.

Like my dad before me, I had the urge to see the world. I joined the Army and served two tours of duty in the Korean War. After the service, I studied at the New York City School of Art on the G.I. Bill and then went on to California. During this time, going back and forth from New York to California, I was involved in many creative ventures. I received scholarships from the Laguna Beach California School of Art for life drawing and stone carving. My formal training taught me to use the different tools, and I consider myself to be a self-taught artist.

“Always follow your heart and talent!”
